Alien: Romulus left a lot of mysteries open, but the film is completely different upon the confirmation of who the father of Kay's baby is. The characters in Alien: Romulus have clearly been friends for a long time, and while the film puts a lot of effort into characterizing them, there are clearly a lot of things that the audience isn't let in on. One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the characters has to do with who the father of Kay's baby is. Although some didn't pick up on it, Alien: Romulus may have hinted at a surprisingly dark answer.
The cast of Alien: Romulus is all-new to the franchise, with the batch of Weyland-Yutani employees having no connection to any of the other characters in the original Alien timeline. While most viewers have left Alien: Romulus talking about how interesting Rain and Andy were, with them being the two main characters of the film, the other four members of the Weyland-Yutani heist also have a lot to love. Kay is one of these side characters, and while her pregnancy winds up setting up the film's final battle, it also is one of the movie's biggest mysteries.

Alien: Romulus Reveal Makes Kay's Baby A Result Of Incest
Putting A Dark Twist On The Film's Final Villain
As it turns out, the identity of Kay's baby in Alien: Romulus means that their child is the result of incest. It has been confirmed that Bjorn is the father of Kay's baby in Alien: Romulus, with director Fede Álvarez confirming this while responding to a fan theory that was speculating on the matter. When asked about her pregnancy by Rain, Kay simply said that the baby's father was some jerk from her home planet, not revealing who the father's true identity was. However, this parental reveal definitely complicates things for the film.
In Alien: Romulus, Kay and Bjorn are cousins, meaning that their incestuous relationship is what led to her pregnancy. Very little is revealed about their relationship in the film, which is why it wasn't obvious that Bjorn was the father. While their incestuous relationship may have caused fears about their being complications with the child, these fears didn't come to fruition, as Kay's use of the black goo from Prometheus led to her baby mutating into the film's final alien. This reveal is a dark twist on Kay's pregnancy, complicating the character dynamics of Alien: Romulus.

Kay's Relationship To Bjorn Suggests Why She Hid Her Pregnancy
She Didn't Want The Crew To Know
Kay hides her pregnancy throughout Alien: Romulus, with her only telling Rain after she discovers Kay throwing up from the pregnancy. It is never explained why Kay wants to keep her pregnancy a secret from her friends, but if Bjorn truly is the father, then this decision would make sense. Alien: Romulus doesn't paint Bjorn out to be the greatest guy, and finding out that Kay is pregnant could upset him. She probably also has mixed feelings about Bjorn, explaining why she refers to him as a jerk throughout the movie.
Keeping her pregnancy a secret from the rest of the crew also makes sense, as she may not want them to know that she was in an incestuous relationship with her cousin. She could be worried about being looked down on by the rest of the crew, with her decision to tell Rain showing that she trusts her more than the others. Although this storyline is mostly hinted at rather than explicitly explained, this Bjorn reveal turns Kay into one of Alien: Romulus' most interesting characters.

Bjorn & Kay's History Changes Their Last Moment Together In Alien: Romulus
It Is The Main Supporting Evidence Of This Storyline
Knowing this information about Bjorn and Kay has a big impact on the viewing experience of Alien: Romulus, as it completely changes their last moment together. Before Bjorn dies at the end of Alien: Romulus, Kay and Bjorn have a sweet moment together that shows a lot of intimacy between the two. The film had previously not set up while the two would interact like this, with a secret sexual relationship being a perfect explanation.
This scene shows that Kay truly still cares for Bjorn, despite her calling him a jerk to Rain earlier in the film. Although this moment is small, it is the key detail that gives away that Bjorn is Kay's father, with this being part of the theory that the director confirmed. Secrets like this are why the story of Alien: Romulus works so well, and there is no telling what other kind of narrative hints could be hiding within the film.
