Imagine turning on your LG smart TV only to find a new app sitting on your screen that you never asked for—this is the reality for some users after LG's recent update. Microsoft has made a bold move this year by introducing its Copilot AI chatbot across various platforms, and now it's showing up on LG televisions, whether owners appreciate it or not.
In the past few days, numerous LG smart TV users have flooded online forums with complaints about the sudden appearance of the unremovable Copilot app. Two staff members from Engadget tested this out on both a 2022 LG OLED model and a 2023 UA8000, discovering that once installed, the app cannot be deleted from the device. Although they managed to hide it from their home screens, the fact remains that it occupies space on their TVs without consent. Interestingly, another team member with a 2022 LG OLED reported not finding the Copilot app at all, suggesting that the experience might vary greatly based on individual privacy settings and permissions established with LG.
During the CES 2025 event, LG announced plans to incorporate an AI Search feature powered by Copilot in their upcoming television models. However, integrating such a permanent AI application without the option for removal could leave many customers feeling uneasy, especially considering the mixed reception of Copilot among AI assistant users.
