"It's like a snowball effect," Ms. Harding adds. "The initial wage gap leads to a pension gap, and over decades, this gap becomes a chasm."

And this is the part most people miss: pensions highlight the long-term impact of the gender pay gap. It's not just about equal pay for equal work; it's about the future financial security of women.

The proposed cap on salary sacrifice schemes by Rachel Reeves, if implemented, could further exacerbate the problem. While the Treasury might gain £3-4bn, it could discourage people from contributing to their workplace pensions, opting instead to take the money in their pay packet.

A recent poll by pension provider Penfold suggests that almost three-quarters of people believe the government won't prioritize pensions in the upcoming Budget. If this is the case, living standards in retirement could continue to deteriorate, and women, already at a disadvantage, will bear the brunt of it.

Sarah Pennells, a personal finance expert, emphasizes the additional barriers women face mid-career, particularly during menopause. "It's an issue that affects women's financial futures and the talent pool of UK employers," she says.

Ms. Harding also highlights the importance of considering pensions during divorce settlements, urging those going through this process to seek professional advice.

New research from Canaccord Wealth shows that while many women are taking steps to manage their finances, few feel truly in control. Alice Wright, investment director at Canaccord Wealth, believes the key challenge is overcoming the stress and anxiety associated with financial planning.

"It's time to empower women to take control of their financial futures," she says. "Financial planning doesn't have to be daunting. Small steps can make a big difference, and we need to encourage more women to take that first step."
